J. Scott Armstrong: WWF Smackdown!
In his discussion on today’s Climatology panel, J. Scott Armstrong talked about the curious polar bear campaign by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). We’ve all seen the Noah Wyle TV ads ad nauseum which implore:
“Polar bears are on their way to extinction. If we don’t act now, most will die in our children’s lifetime. But you can help change that. Call now and join the Wildlife Rescue team…If we don’t act now, it could be too late for the polar bear.”
There’s just one problem, there’s no real basis for these claim as Armstrong notes in his study here.
Armstrong also highlighted a January 30th 2008 Senate EPW hearing in which he noted that there were many more polar bears now than a few decades ago because of the successful ban on hunting them.
Armstrong has been pressing WWF’s President and trustees and asked them to provide proof of polar bear decline or correct the ads. He even offered to circulate their response here at the International Conference on Climate Change. No response.
But it looks as though WWF has changed their tune as of Feburary 2009 as Armstrong points to the following from their website:
“The general status of polar bears is currently stable, though there are differences between the populations. Some are stable, some seem to be increasing and some are decreasing due to various pressures. The status of several populations is not well documented.”

This is exactly why I quit the WWF.They either lie or blow smoke in order to convince people that the death of the Polar Bear is imminent. Organizations like the WWF do this because keeping us in the dark about the facts, will ensure continuation of the donations that they constantly beg for. I do my part for animals and the planet, but they(WWF) can never convince me that we are causing the death of the planet. Anyone with half a brain could see that that is a lie. The people who promote it are looking to feather their own nests. If Al Gore weren’t getting rich pushing the G.W. agenda he’d change his tune in a minute!
Thanks,
Connie
This is totaly absurd. This whacko group is nothing short of being liars! If they had scientific data backing thier claim it woould be one thing, but they don’t.
There are too many ignorant people in this country…so they get what they desereve.
